Abstract

The information about eBook cannot be added automatically to library catalog because the eBook Service Provider does not provide enough eBook metadata. Therefore, this paper was developed the eBook library's metadata in order to maintain the compatibility and interoperability among various metadata standard. In trying to accomplish this, we have comparatively analyzed the eBook service provider's metadata, KS X 6100 metadata, Dublin Core, MARC, and TEI Header, and extracted common metadata elements from them. We defined these common metadata elements as a core element and added other elements that uniquely describe eBook characteristics as a detailed and additional elements for eBook metadata.

Abstract

Electronic publications, including e-journals, show a rapid expansion due to its several advantages for the academic and research community. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of e-journals on scholarly communication. The impact factors and immediacy indices were provided via JCR social science edition have been used to conduct a series of analysis on three subject fields, economics, law and psychology. The data from the last eight years show that the impact factors of e-journals have not changed, but immediacy indices have intensely increased in recent two years. Significant increase of immediacy indices is probably due to prevalence of e-journals or electronic sources of articles. The result reveals that e-journals play an important role in speeding up the scholarly communication. It is expected that the findings of this study can contribute to more efficient management of the digital libraries.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether event tracking is more effective in event retrieval than information filtering. This study examined the two techniques for event retrieval to suggest the more effective one. The event-retrieval performances of the event tracking technique based on a kNN classifier and the query-based information filtering technique were compared. Two event tracking experiments, one with the static training set and the other with the dynamic training set, were carried out. Two information filtering experiments, one with initial queries and the other with refined queries, were also carried out to evaluate the event-retrieval effectiveness. We found that the event tracking technique with the static training set performed better than one with the dynamic training set. It was also found that the information filtering technique using intial queries performed better than one using the refined queries. In conclusion, the comparison of the best cases of event tracking and information filtering revealed that the information filtering technique outperformed the event tracking technique in event retrieval.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to construct a system based on the semantic web environment's ontology by utilizing the ontology schema derived from the facet-type Art and Architecture Thesaurus(AAT). The aforementioned ontology schema is based on the Web Ontology Language(OWL), which is being widely considered the standard ontology language for the W3C-centered semantic web environment. Also, the concepts were limited to terms within AAT's Furniture Facet, and the system was tested using the Chair concept, which is a lower-level facet that has a diverse conceptual relationship and broad vocabulary base. The ontology system is capable of searching for concepts, while controlling the search results by always providing a 'Preferred term' for synonymous terms. In addition, the system provides the user with first, a relationship between the terms centered around the inquiry, and second, related terms along with their classification properties. Also, the system is presented as an application example of the ontology system that constructs a information system that intakes an Instance value and reproduces it into a RDF file. During this process, utilization of multiple ontologies was introduced, and the stored Instance value's meta-data elements were used.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the usability and the value of Web resources as an academic information in writing a paper by citation analysis. In this study each articles from five academic journals in the field of LIS and computers, published from 1999 to 2000, was selected for citation analysis. The result shows that articles in Journal of the Korean Society for Information Management cited the most, and Korea Information Processing Society Review the least, in terms of average number of citing Web resources. In respect of citing rate of Web resources Communications of the Korea Information Science Society was high to 22% of all cited documents, and Journal of the Korean Society for Information Management was the second as high as 18.5%. Articles from selected journals have been increased in citing Web resources form 1999 to 2002. However, Korea Information Processing Society Review appears to be decreased, instead.

Abstract

The Basic Semantic Register(BSR) is and official ISO register designed for interoperability among eBusiness and EDI systems. The entities registered in the current BSR are not defined in a machine-understandable way, which renders automatic extraction of structural and relationship information from the register impossible. The purpose of this study is to offer a framework for designing an ontology that can provide semantic interoperability among BSR-based systems by defining data structures and relationships with RDF and OWL, similar meaning by the 'equivalentClass' construct in OWL, the hierachical relationships among classes by the 'subClassOf' construct in RDF schema, definition of any entities in BSR by the 'label' construct in RDF schema, specification of usage guidelines by the 'comment' construct in RDF schema, assignment of classes to BSU's by the 'domain' construct in RDF schema, specification of data types of BSU's by the 'range' construct in RDF schema. Hierarchical relationships among properties in BSR can be expressed using the 'subPropertyOf' in RDF schema. Progress in semantic interoperability can be expected among BSR-based systems through applications of semantic web technology suggested in this study.

Abstract

This study was conducted upon the premise that index terms display the intellectual structure of a specific subject field. In this study, an attempt was made to grasp the intellectual structure of Library and Information Science by clustering the index terms of the journals of the related academic societies at the Library of National Assembly - such as the Journal of the Korean Society for Information Management, the Journal of the Korean Library and Information Science Society, and the Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science. Through the course of the study, index term clusters were generated based on the linkage of the index terms and the frequency of co-occurrence, and moreover, time periods analysis was conducted along with studies on first-appearing terms, in order to clarify the trend and development process of the Library and Information Science. This study also analysed the difference between two intellectual structure by comparing the structure generated by index term clusters with the existing structure of traditional classification systems.
