Abstract

Visualization of documents will help users when they do search similar documents, and all research in information retrieval addresses itself to the problem of a user with an information need facing a data source containing an acceptable solution to that need. In various contexts, adequate solutions to this problem have included alphabetized cubbyholes housing papyrus rolls, microfilm registers, card catalogs and inverted files coded onto discs. Many information retrieval systems rely on the use of a document surrogate. Though they might be surprise to discover it, nearly every information seeker uses an array of document surrogates. Summaries, tables of contents, abstracts, reviews, and MARC recordsthese are all document surrogates. That is, they stand infor a document allowing a user to make some decision regarding it, whether to retrieve a book from the stacks, whether to read an entire article, etc.In this paper another type of document surrogate is investigated using a grouping method of term list. Using Multidimensional Scaling Method (MDS) those surrogates are visualized on two-dimensional graph. The distances between dots on the two-dimensional graph can be represented as the similarity of the documents. More close the distance, more similar the documents.

Abstract

With the rapid growth of information technology and the internet, the physical contents are transformed into digital contents at a fast rate. With the change, accessing the digital contents, the service methods and the identifier used for the digital contents are not systematic and limited for use. The DOI identifier system used for the URN is also limited to academic journals or magazines and are not adequately applicable for non-academic journal or digital contents. Therefore, we have developed a unique identifier based on the analysis made on the system adopted by foreign digital contents service institutes, two types of academic journals 3 types of non-academic journals owned by KISTI that can be adopted by non-academic journals. The identifier is to be used to design and implement a digital contents service system.

Abstract

Information center represents an important source which seems very well suited for knowledge management investigation. Information center is knowledge intensive and the use of advanced technology may transform the knowledge of business processes for delivering an unique capabilities in an organization. To exam knowledge management, organization culture, importance of knowledge, and support of information technology were identified as potential predictors of knowledge management support in information center. Three hypotheses have been tested with 43 database management specialist surveys. This study presents that the level of information sharing and knowledge exchange is significantly influenced by the extent support of information technology.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to review the characteristics of a web-based question-answer service and to analyze the information needs and use behavior of the service for a more efficient question-answer service plan. On the basis of the findings, this study makes suggestions for the question-answer service in respect of reinforcing the effectiveness of information itself and the efficiency of question-answer services. The speciality, accuracy, and specificity including the variety of themes should be improved for more effective information. Also, interactivity, readiness, and convenience should be improved for a more efficient service.

Abstract

Traditionally, theses and dissertations have been extremely underutilized information sources due to their lack of physical availability. The development of electronic theses and dissertations system will provide the opportunity for theses and dissertations to be recognized as a basic channel for the dissemination of research findings and an essential resource in the discovery process. In digital environment, many universities and libraries throughout the world are now making digitized versions of traditional(print) dissertations available online. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the current theses and dissertations management system based on web questionaries and survey of home pages, and to suggest a standardized theses and dissertation management model in Korea.

Abstract

Recent research in the field of medical information systems has paid much attention to an ontology based medical terminology system to support clinical study and effective information search. This study aims to conduct research for further application or construction of ontology systems in Korea. This research reviews the theory of concept modeling and ontology, and analyses 4 cases of conceptual modeling of medical terminologies by ontology. The findings of this study display these specific characteristics in medical ontologies : (1) The standardization of terminology on MeSH. (2) The conceptualization of terminology on UMLS. (1) and (2) are showed as unformal ontologies. (3) The theory of ontology integration in ON9. (4) The reference model of medical knowledge with formalization in GALEN. (3) and (4) are showed as formal ontologies. The application and construction of ontology should be differentiated according to the level of the proposed system, and then this analysis will provide useful information for the researcher and developer of the system.

Recently, Web-based library instruction is incomplete in domestic situation. The purpose of this study is to present the design criteria of web-based library instruction programs. This study draws elements of synthetic criteria that are analyzed by evaluation criteria of web site and web-based library instruction, and compares and analyzes web-based library instruction programs.

Abstract

The electronic documents have the documental aspect that can legible by human and the electronic aspect that can be interpreted and processed automatically by machinery. This usability of electronic documents must be the reason that people use them in almost all the business areas rapidly in these days. That is because we have to utilize the characteristics to interchange electronic documents(EDI) effectively and efficiently. The electronic document interchange of Korean government cannot make the best of this benefit due to the traditional way of thinking based on paper document and the viewpoint of individual business, organization, and project. This paper proposed a direction of EDI for Korean government. At first, the concept of electronic docuemnts is defined. The reason and limitations of structuring the documents with XML and the hidden problems of present EDI in Korean public sector are also explained. And the way to preserve information, to design the structure of electronic document, and to maintain relevant standards is proposed.

Abstract

In order to design effective electronic records management systems, it is viable to consider both traditional principles of records management, proven to be effective, and the characteristics of digital information. ISO 15489, an international standard for records management, is acknowledged as the most useful guidelines for this goal. The present study extracted basic principles of electronic records management from its provisions of 7 functional steps. It then compared the principles to system requirements of three system design criterion, developed by Department of Defense(U.S.A.), Public Records Office(Britain), and European Union respectively. Common requirements, included in all three criterion, were then searched in the Korean standard of developing automated systems for records centers. Finally, suggestions were made to develop a Korean standard for electronic records management system, elaborating from the core requirements of the system found by the present study.
