Abstract

Faceted navigation has brought a lot of changes to traditional library catalog and is one of the resource discovery interfaces in next-gen library catalog. Faceted navigation usually divides too much retrieved results into some relevant facets for user's convenient navigation. The faceted navigation of 9 libraries adopting resource discovery interfaces was analyzed in this article. The terms are much broader or different from the users' terms so that the users can't properly use the facets. It is essential to maintain consistency with using the terms to provide users with faceted navigation service and this study has found how exactly authority work was done in analysis of the author facets. Also, public libraries introducing faceted navigation need to consider including some facets for various users and university libraries need to consider detailed division of resource types.

Abstract

Information literacy of the individuals affects their competitive capability significantly by providing problem solving skills in the short run, and by enabling life-long learning in the long run. This study examines if information literacy capacity has any relationship with individuals' achievement level through the experiment with college student subject group. As evidences for individual achievement level, we adopted GPA's(grade point average) of students. As a result, it was confirmed that information literacy and academic achievements has positive relationship. Additionally, it has been found that this relationship has a tendency of sustaining for a significant period. These experiment results would serve as a rationale for providing information literacy courses in the academic curriculum.

Abstract

Statement of responsibility in bibliographical records plays a key role in clarifying intellectual responsibility of the work, and it also plays a role in making up access points. However, cataloging rules for the statement of responsibility mostly deal with the distinction between the principal role and minor roles. This becomes a problem because the responsibility type itself is more important than the order of the types. For this reason, in this paper I will explore improvements of the description methods of statement of responsibility by organizing the role indicators. Namely, using the role indicators more effectively than the current description methods do, we can collocate the dispersed statements of responsibilities. The role indicators can also be used for an author facet in information retrieval and can provide additional information for authority control.

Abstract

This study is to seek to apply resource types of RDA to KCR4. It is difficult to choose appropriate term and to embody FRBR model because GMD of KCR4 is the mixture of content-based vocabularies and carrier-based vocabularies. SMD is to need to reflect the current technological terms. Resource type of RDA was already developed to overcome limitation of AACR2's GMD, and would affect the world cataloging environment, therefore it is need to apply resource type of RDA to Korean cataloging rule. For this study, case study and survey were used. In case study, it was to scan all GMD term for one university library to build by programming and to grape librarian and users’ potential need. In the survey by cataloging librarian, it was to figure out the current description of resource type in university library and to test RDA resource type. As a result, it was needed to revise the vocabulary to the obvious and user-understandable list. Also it was different in correction rate in RDA testing by resource type. Based on the case study and the survey, RDA resource type was applied to KCR4 resource list by adding term such as computer game in content type, and by inserting terms such as DVD, CD-ROM, Blu-Ray, computer file in carrier type. It also applied RDA description method and display means to KCR4. This study would apply RDA resource type to KCR4 and contribute to revise KCR4 resource type.

Abstract

Context-awareness as a key technology of ubiquitous computing needs a context model that understands and processes situational information coming from diverse sensors and devices, and can be applied diversely in various domains. Semantic web based ontologies use structured standard format and express meaning of information, so it is possible to recognize effectively context-awareness situations, allowing the system to share information and understand situation by inference. In this paper, we propose a layered ontology model to support generality and scaleability of the context-awareness system, and applied the model to u-Convention domain. In addition, we propose a effective reasoning method to handle compound situation by combining OWL-DL and SWRL rules.

Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the actual condition of data related to Korea shown in the catalog of 15 countries. This study was to compare the subject characteristics of Korea-related subject heading, record collection, and the characteristics of several subject heading, which has been a major issue. The results are as follows. To begin with, Korea-related record in most other national libraries runs absolutely short except for some countries like United States. Korea-related record is generally 2 to 3 times less than Japan related record. Second, referring to the subject distribution in sub criteria of Korea-related record, subject related to ‘history’ and ‘economy’ is shown in the highest rate. Considering that ‘Korean war’ shows the highest rate in Italy and Canada, we can consider that this may cause the distortion of the perception of Korea. Third, in the case of Korea-related record, the record of South Korea is 1.5 to 5 times more than that of North Kore, except for some countries like United States. Forth, regarding the subject headings, the terms such as ‘Taekwondo’, ‘Kimchi’, ‘Tok-do’, ‘Tong-hae’ have different meanings in different countries. However, these terms agree to LCSH in most countries except for neighboring countries. Fifth, in case of China and Japan, the subject headings in reference to political and historical position are raising some problems.

Abstract

Using the library users' data in Lake County Public Library Systems, Florida, US, this study discussed how geographic information systems can be applied in LIS fields. These data were analyzed with such GIS functions as geocoding, Thiessen polygon, density, buffer, and distance measurement. Results indicate that findings from a study of these functions allowed for, not only a better understanding of the geographic locations of library users and user’s library activity patterns, but also for the ability to identify library market areas for future library service planning. Additionally, results from a study of the Thiesen polygon and buffer functions indicated the distance impact on library use. Regarding the travel distance of library users, the measurement of distance using road networks was suggested.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the implications that GIS(Geographic Information Systems) can have in public library collection selection and service development from a marketing perspective. GIS is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information. Through the understanding and utilization of GIS, we can collect geographical, transportation, political, legal, demographic, economic, social, cultural, educational, and recreational information of the community. Public libraries can utilize GIS for market research, including customer analysis to select library collection and develop library service based on library users' needs. As a result, public libraries can find a way to make a lasting relationship with users which is the final goal of marketing activities.

Abstract

Web accessibility refers to the practice of providing equal access to web sites to people without and with disability. This study aims to investigate the web content accessibility of 153 university libraries in Korea, and further suggest the approach to implement an effective university library web site to meet Korean Web Content Accessibility Guidelines(KWCAG). Survey was conducted with two steps. The first step was to find out the general level of web accessibility of all university library web sites using an automatic appraisal tool, KADO-WAH2.0, and the detailed examination of web accessibility check items was limited to 19 web sites which proved excellent in automatic appraisal. Regretfully, the result says that there is no perfect web site. Therefore every university library is advisable to make good use of the findings to meet all the requirements of KWCAG. In particular, the basic requirements, such as voice service, resizing and highlighting text, must be fulfilled by priority and to almost all contents.

Abstract

Many e-book readers have become available as e-books are in popular use these days. We first developed the evaluation criteria and elements for testing the usability of e-book readers and then examined the usability of three e-book readers. The usability testing was conducted using three e-book readers that were most popular with 15 participants that consisted of middle school students, university students, and office workers. The study found that iPad showed the best usability. In case of Amazon Kindle, participants indicated that the lack of the touch function imposed a great deal of negative impact on the usability of the interface. Also, the hardware- and software-oriented usability provided by an e-book reader was considered to be a very important element for the users, and the portability in connection with the hardware-oriented aspect of an e-book reader was shown to be of great effect to the overall usability of an e-book reader.

Abstract

This study examines how and which direction respondents who participated in 5-point Likert scale surveys change their initial responses when they are given an identical second survey after certain treatments. The research employs three identical questionnaires (first, second and third surveys) to analyze survey results based on group differences, kinds of treatment, survey purposes, and response change direction and the degree. This paper concludes that, first, it is significant that specialist groups do not change their initial responses compared to a general librarian group. Second, there are no differences by survey purpose; however, participants tend to change their initial responses by others’ opinions rather than by previous use experiences. Third, participants who initially answered positively tend not to change their responses, and most participants who answered negatively change their initial responses in a positive direction. Fourth, when there are changes, participants change their initial responses by less than two points, and most of them change by one point. Finally, the hypothesis that middle responses change most and that participants who respond at both ends do not change their opinion was rejected by the finding that participants who answered on the negative end tend to change their initial responses in a positive direction.
