Abstract

The study examines two aspects that relate to undergraduates’ selection and use of information sources for their academic assignments: (1) sources perceived useful vs. sources frequently used, and (2) source characteristics considered important as selection criteria vs. selection criteria used as reflected in characteristics of frequently used sources. A survey of 251 undergraduate students attempted to address the gaps between what students think they should do and what they actually do with regard to source selection. Characteristics of frequently used sources were analyzed to find out the criteria used for source selection. Friends/family were among the frequently used sources although they were not perceived as useful. Unlike other sources suffering gaps between the perceived usefulness and the use behavior, Web sources were the ones not only perceived most useful but also used most frequently. When the important selection criteria were compared with the characteristic of sources used often, students did not seem to actually use the selection criteria they thought important. While students considered some characteristics related to information quality (e.g., accuracy, comprehensiveness) as important criteria for source selection, the actual criteria they applied for choosing information sources could be described as ‘convenient’ or ‘accessible’ (e.g., efficient/time saving, easy to use, familiar, accessible). Based on the findings, suggestions were made to help bridge such gaps through information literacy programs and information systems design.

Abstract

In this study, we analyze the agenda setting and policy making process of the establishment of Gyeonggido Cyber Library, which has played an important role for development of public libraries in Gyeonggido since its launching, based on Kingdon’s policy streams model. According to the model, policy formation is described as the result from the convergence of the three streams, such as problem, policy and politics streams. When these streams converge on a specific time point, a policy window is created so that the issues become policy agenda. At this moment, policy entrepreneurs propose their alternatives, which have been prepared already, and try to pass it through the window. We identify coupling of the streams in the policy window and the role of policy entrepreneurs in the process of agenda setting and selection of alternatives of Gyeonggido Cyber Library policy. Suggestions are provided based on the analysis for public policy formation in public libraries domain.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are (1) to examine the relationships among attitude on SNS use, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and SNS use, (2) to analyze effect of SNS use on bonding network and bridging network, (3) to consider moderating effect of the gender on the relationship between SNS use and Social network. We conducted a survey for 20-30’s SNS user. The results of analysis using the Structural Equation Model(SEM) represent that attitude on SNS use, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control are significant determinants of the SNS use. SNS use affects bonding network and bridging network. An interesting result was observed that the gender had moderating effect on the relationship between SNS use and social network. Based on these results, we suggest theoretical and practical implications of this study.

Abstract

Using user satisfaction surveys and LibQUAL+ instruments, libraries are increasingly gathering qualitative data such as verbatim user comments as well as quantitative data. Such qualitative data can be utilized as clues in establishing library service strategies: to better understand user issues, to identify areas for service improvement, and to prioritize user needs. For this, it is necessary to analyze user comments data and to apply results to the delivery of service and the library policies. This study is an attempt to investigate ways in which user comments data can be made useful in libraries. It identifies different methods of analyzing user comments data from LibQUAL+ surveys and compares qualitative data analysis software programs and taxonomies. It also presents the results of applying these tools to a subset of actual user comments data gathered from a recent LibQUAL+ survey at a major university library in Korea.

Abstract

A number of studies and models have focused on collaborative information behavior (CIB) in various contexts as the importance of research on CIB is recognized in information behavior research. This study compared and analyzed the models of CIB developed by Prekop (2002), Reddy and Jansen (2008), Shah (2008), Karunakaran, Spence and Reddy (2010), and Yue and He (2010), and discussed the direction of future studies of CIB. The future research strategies for overcoming the limitation of previous studies and models on CIB are to extend research object and context, to do holistic research approach tracing complexity of CIB, and to debate and verify the models of CIB. In particular, it needs to modify and improve the models based on the empirical research for domestic context.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the influence of the expectation and perceived performance of the online science & technology information service quality on user satisfaction and royalty. To achieve this goal, we use the NDSLQual model to measure the quality of NDSL service. The results were as follows: First, among seven expectation factors, four factors (reliability, convenience, system usability and information quality) had a positive effect on the user satisfaction. Second, while service recovery had a negative effect on the royalty, the other six factors (reliability, convenience, system usability, responsiveness, security and information quality) had a positive effect on the royalty. Third, among seven perceived performance factors, three factors (reliability, convenience and information quality) had a positive effect on the user satisfaction. Fourth, among seven perceived performance factors, three factors (reliability, convenience and information quality) had a positive effect on the royalty. As a result, information quality, reliability and convenience of the expectation and perceived performance are common factors influencing user satisfaction and royalty.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the data coverage and citation threshold for analyzing SPLC(Search Path Link Count) as a main path of a historiograph of a certain topic in order to provide ‘core’ papers of global research trends to a researcher affiliated with a local R&D institution. 5 datasets were constructed by retrieving and collecting 2,318 articles on RGB LED on Web of Science published from 1990-2013 and 20,109 articles which cited these original 2,318. The SPLC analysis was performed on each dataset by increasing the threshold of citation counts, and the changes and resilience of the 28 extraced networks were compared. The results of user feedback on 198 unique core papers from 28 SPLC networks received from LED researchers affiliated with a Korean government-sponsored research institution were also analyzed. As a result, it is found that the nodes in each SPLC network in each dataset were differentiated by the citation counts, while the changes in the structure of SPLC networks were slight after the networks’ citation counts were set at 40. Additionally, the user feedback showed that personalized research interest generally matched to the global research trends identified by the SPLC analysis.

Abstract

Anyone curious to easily access and learn Korean history has become interested in Korean history data bases, which will provide accurate and reliable historical information. Furthermore, user demands for information sharing and reusability, available through setting up a semantic web, have been increased, which have taken the shape of linked data. Efforts have been made to construct public data bases containing readily usable contents a user can understand and utilize with ease. They have been produced by several organizations, portal sites, and individuals, trying to deviate from existing mainstreams - expert-based text data bases. A problem with those data bases is that they have not considered such vital factors as the sharing and utilizing of information as a whole. This study suggests a LOD-based Korean history contents implementation system, providing rich information environment by way of multi-dimensional web-data connections. In doing so, this system has tried a historic information circulation service system which is based on information sharing and connecting.

Abstract

Cinematographic works are crucial for libraries as a part of their collections. Especially public libraries provide a variety of programs associated with cinematographic works. Copyright law considers the use of cinematographic works as a type of public performance and restricted it under certain conditions such as the released date. In addition, copyright agency challenged libraries to pay fees for cinematographic works released within 6 months. At this point, this study investigated the perception of librarians on cinematographic works and copyright issues. 292 librarians in public and academic libraries answers the questionnaire form May 8th to June 7th, 2013. In result, librarians consider services of video works as a important part of library services. They are also conscious of the exception conditions for copyright law for cinematographic works provided by library services. Furthermore, even though librarians are aware of copyright issues, they show the negative response to copyright fees for playing cinematographic works in the libraries.
