Abstract

Information literacy education which deals with the ability for recognizing the necessity of information, finding, evaluating, and using the information effectively is essential for the college members to do research or learn effectively. This study intended to suggest the lecture program for information literacy education for college students based on information literacy standards and models suggested by the organizations and scholars domestic and foreign as well as information literacy education cases. Information literacy education should be adopted as a regular curriculum to overcome one time event’s limit. Besides, the professional librarians must involve as a role either leading or cooperative in running information literacy education in order to relate the library resources with the education and use them effectively. Finally, when it comes to the strategic aspect of the college library and the librarians’ role, the professional librarians’ leading or cooperative role is also essential. Additionally, analysis shows that information literacy education needs to be reorganized in contents so that it reflects the college students’ patterns to use information and their needs. Lastly, it needs to be thought over in how to lead the students to participate in the course independently and voluntarily.

Abstract

The construction of preservation metadata is a prerequisite for the preservation of digital information. In the current approaches to digital archiving, however, there is no metadata structure optimized to describe preserved digital objects. This research proposed metadata packages that can support the description of digital objects from the perspective of the core processes of digital archiving. The proposed metadata packages consist of 4 wrapper elements and 25 sub-elements. They can provide detailed descriptions required to preserve digital objects in accordance with the core processes of digital archiving. Therefore, the proposed metadata package can be applied to digital archiving as a better approach to the description of digital objects compared to the approaches to information package.

Abstract

There were not many ways to share research data in the past, but modern information technology has allowed us to share these data. As data sharing has its side effects, researchers’ attitude and practice to sharing data vary by individual discipline. This study found that foreign learned societies, NGOs, universities and research funders support data sharing in a utilitarian perspective, while major publishers demand it so that other researchers can verify the data in peer review. It is important that open data policy should be settled down in near future for evoking further studies and encouraging progress in science. In order to establish data sharing successfully in Korea, efforts could be made by researchers, universities, academic libraries, and governments as well as the stakeholder. This study also proposed specific ways to perform it.

Abstract

Users tend to perceive differently the service quality of library depending on the advance of digital information technologies. It is necessary to analyze the cumulative results of LibQUAL+ in order to identify the suggestions for improvement of library services. This study aims to comparatively analyze the results of LibQUAL+ and demonstrate the trends and changes for the services of university library. To achieve the purpose of this study, two university libraries were selected for analysis. The library of McGill University in Canada was selected with the six years’ results of LibQUAL+. Another library located in Seoul was selected with the 2012 result of LibQUAL+ and a new LibQUAL+ in 20015 was conducted for this study. The results were analyzed with three dimensions and 22 items in terms of circular chart, bar chart, and graph. Findings of this study indicated that there were substantial differences in terms of years of LibQUAL+ survey and user groups with undergraduate/graduate students in three dimensions. In particular, the results of A library showed that users were likely to expect more from the university library, but they perceived low service quality. In addition, there was found considerable differences among users groups in terms of undergraduate and graduate students. The improvements for library services need to focus on three dimensions such as staff, resources, and facilities as well as customized services for individual user groups.

Abstract

This study came up a library thought and the theory of cataloging through analyzing the life and writings of Seymour Lubetzky who founded the principals of cataloging in the twentieth century. This study investigated the historical social, ideological, and cultural context, using a literature survey and the methodology of historical research. Moreover, this study aimed a comprehensive research based on the results of domestic and foreign fragmentary studies, and analyzed the effects of Lubetzky’s thought of cataloging. Thus, this study found Lubetzky’s library and cataloging thought. The theory of cataloging that analyzes the above findings is the design of cataloging rules and a bibliographical relationship establishment. First of all, the principles of descriptive cataloging should contain the necessity, simplicity, unity, consistency, finality, and the characteristics of interrelations, and clarify the purpose of cataloging. The bibliographical relationship is built on dividing a work as an intellectual product into a book as a physical substance. Moreover, a basic entry is entered on the basis of author names for planning the concentration of works, and a corporate name and an anonym are contained in the author names for extending the concept of author.

Abstract

The purpose of this conceptual paper is to identify the library services market and its characteristics versus the common commodity market so that marketing and management in library services can be more fruitful in terms of research and development. Based on the developed hypothetical market, a library services market is identified; the market is then characterized in comparison to the common commodity market using three theoretical characteristics of the library services market: indirect exchange, limited competition, and time-lagging exchange. Based on these characteristics, two possible research directions are suggested: development of goals for library management and consideration of applications in library marketing.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the research fields constituting the knowledge structure of the Korean Studies by applying hierarchical clustering method to domestic journal papers in Korean Studies. We analyzed 3,800 papers containing Korean author keyword that were listed in 14 kinds of Korean Studies journals published in 2004-2013, which have average impact factor more than 0.5 in 2011-2013. The results of the analysis show that the central research fields are the subjects related to political & social problems based on Confucian ideas focusing on Neo-Confucianism(Seonglihak) and Realist School of Confucianism(Silhak), to the political situation associated with territorial division of the Korean peninsula, and to the history from the period of japanese colonialism to modern and contemporary. It has been also found that the temporal backgrounds of researches in domestic Korean Studies were related to the modern times and the Joseon Dynasty periods, rather than the time of the ancient and contemporary.

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the perception of professionalism of librarians in public libraries and difference in that regard between librarians and library users in terms of branding and brand communication. To achieve this goal, a series of statistical analysis was conducted using a questionnaire survey of librarians in public libraries and library users. The results showed that brand communication between public librarians and library users is inactivated for each element. Therefore, they need external branding that relates to the public libraries and librarians characteristics in professionalism for library users and internal branding that relates to librarian’s professionalism and the expertise of librarians so as to improve brand communication further.

Abstract

This study examined the relative retrieval effectiveness after relevance feedback between two systems (Title/Abstract and Full-text) using four different sets of relevance judgment. Four relevance levels (not relevant, marginally relevant, relevant, highly relevant) are also used, each of which is determined by referees giving a relevance score to documents. This study also investigated how much the average precision was improved after relevance feedback when “marginally relevant” documents are included in the relevant class with the Title/Abstract system, and with the Full-text retrieval system as well. It is found that the Title/Abstract system benefited from relevance feedback with the marginally relevant documents. In case of the Title/Abstract system, the higher percentage of improvement was consistently obtained when including the marginally relevant documents in the relevance class, however the result was vice versa in case of the Full-text retrieval system. It implied that the marginally relevant documents in the relevant class had caused noises in the Full-text retrieval system.

Abstract

This study analyzed the policy making process by finding factors of a back-in phenomenon appeared in contracting out of public library using advocacy coalition framework. The coalitions were divided into ‘agreement of direct management’, ‘opposition of direct management’ and ‘keep the contract out’. Considering their belief and activity, to share core belief could make a change of secondary belief. It suggests that activating public sphere is necessary for enforcement of their strategies throughout the library policy.

Abstract

This study analyzes in various aspects the success factors in the development of the ETRI Journal which has been published by the Electronic and Telecommunications Research Institute, Korea, as an example case international journal by the institution. The results show that it ould be enlisted in SCI within 3 years after preparing the works for enlisting in it based on the supports from ETRI as well as the cooperation from members of the institution. From the first year 1996 when preparing the enlisting in SCI, the numbers of the articles published in each issue have been increased, and the members in ETRI have cooperated to publish their articles in the journal and cite the articles from the journal in their own articles and proceedings. The case of ETRI Journal shows that the journal published by institution can, in the first stage of its publication, take full advantage of its characteristics as an institution, if it can gain the cooperations both from the institution and its members.

Abstract

This study proposed a key-frame automatic extraction method for video storyboard surrogates based on users’ cognitive responses, EEG signals and discriminant analysis. Using twenty participants, we examined which ERP pattern is suitable for each step, assuming that there are five image recognition and process steps (stimuli attention, stimuli perception, memory retrieval, stimuli/memory comparison, relevance judgement). As a result, we found that each step has a suitable ERP pattern, such as N100, P200, N400, P3b, and P600. Moreover, we also found that the peak amplitude of left parietal lobe (P7) and the latency of FP2 are important variables in distinguishing among relevant, partial, and non-relevant frames. Using these variables, we conducted a discriminant analysis to classify between relevant and non-relevant frames.

Abstract

The main goal of this study is to investigate how to route a question to some relevant users who have interest in the topic of the question based on users’ topic interest. In order to assess users’ topic interest, archived question-answer pairs in the community were used to identify latent topics in the chosen categories using LDA. Then, these topic models were used to identify users’ topic interest. Furthermore, the topics of newly submitted questions were analyzed using the topic models in order to recommend relevant answerers to the question. This study introduces the process of topic modeling to investigate relevant users based on their topic interest.

Abstract

This study analyzes the copyright problems of document delivery services based on interlibrary loan which are operated by KERIS and KISTI according to the agreements with KORRA. As a result of the study, we found that there are limitations of the libraries and copyright works to implement the document delivery services. Also, the electronic document delivery is the only between librarians and there is no provisions in the agreements for individual users who are not affiliated to libraries. This study suggests introduction of the ground provision for the interlibrary loan in the Copyright Act of Korea and development of authoritative guideline for details of document delivery services. Also, the study suggests that end users to request documents could be print out it but the library have to install systems to avoid copyright infringement. Finally, the study proposes the copyright fee based model for the document delivery services for individual users.
