Abstract

This study conducted a survey to measure recognition distance between the materials which are located separately in a children’s library targeting 200 elementary school lower grade students, higher grade students, and school parents(adults). And compared recognition distance between the elements of materials of individual visitor group with multidimensional scaling and K-mean group analysis. Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) is a technique for projecting the cognitive state in space by evaluating the similarity or attribute of the analysis target. Even though it is mainly used for market diagnosis in marketing, It can also be applied to present an ideal physical layout plan by analyzing the distance. As a result of analysis, the main discoveries are as follows. First, elementary school students cognize child, baby and computer materials should be adjacent as a same group. But recognition of adults(school parents) is reflected by differing from elementary school students vastly. They cognize that computer materials should be formed as a special group separated from child and baby’s materials. Second, elementary school higher graders and adults(school parents) groups also want to separate their main reading materials from baby’s book, therefore They both want to secure silent reading space separating from baby. Third, as a result to confirming how this recognition distance system of materials is reflected in a real children’s library through three children’s libraries in Y-gu, Incheon, there is no library with structure according perfectly with a recognition system of a particular class, but a recognition system of adults and elementary school students is partially reflected because baby, child and computer materials, and baby and child materials are commonly separated and placed. It is difficult to insist that a recognition system of a visitor group, especially a recognition system of children is absolute consideration conditions in material placement of a children’s library. However, understanding cognition of the user groups can be an important evidentiary factors to offer differentiated service space according to visitors and effective placement of the elements of library resources.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness and applications of event collection programs, which are integrated programs with event experience and collection experience as a cooperation model that combines school education and library resources as course-related materials. For the purpose, a triangulated analysis with both quantitative and qualitative data was conducted. As a result, This study examined an event collection program’s effectiveness which were positive effects on the participated students’ reading and perceptions on the roles of their school libraries. The event collection supported the students to self-construct their knowledge by exploring information with the provision of a collection with various materials on a topic, which would be hardly provided within the traditional library subject classification, and that the event collection program could be a useful tool for self-directed reading due to its promotion of interaction, sharing, and participation among materials and the participated students by functional factors of experiential marketing.

Abstract

This study aims to identify factors to the effectiveness of librarians’ continuing education, which is regarded as learning transfer, and to examine the relationship between the effectiveness and the factors identified. Learning transfer is defined as an intention to apply the lessons learned in the education to the learner’s practice. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate continuing education experiences of university librarians. Findings indicate that characteristics of individual librarians, educational program, and organizational environment have to be taken into consideration to manage librarians’ continuing education effectively. Therefore, it is suggested that the university library as an organization should control pre- and post-activities of continuing librarians’ education at the library in order to maximize the learning transfer as the effectiveness of the education. Suggestions are developed with factors to the learning transfer to improve the effectiveness.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the barriers to using mobile health applications based on the Diffusion of Innovations Theory. The study employed a purposive sampling to recruit college students who were non-adopters or rejecters. The study participants were a total of 44 students, who consist of 32 males and 12 females, and paper-based interviews were conducted. The findings of the study indicated that attributes such as relative advantages, complexity, trialability and observability were not considerable factors of impeding the adoption or continuous use of health applications, whereas relative disadvantages and compatibility were. The study suggests that health application developers and service providers minimize relative disadvantages and enhance compatibility of the innovation with consumers’ life styles, rather than try to improve relative advantages and complexity, to more effectively encourage non-adopters to try and maintain using the innovation.

Abstract

This study attempts to infer research fronts using factor graph model based on heterogeneous features. The model suggested by this study infers research fronts having documents with the potential to be cited multiple times in the future. To this end, the documents are represented by bibliographic, network, and content features. Bibliographic features contain bibliographic information such as the number of authors, the number of institutions to which the authors belong, proceedings, the number of keywords the authors provide, funds, the number of references, the number of pages, and the journal impact factor. Network features include degree centrality, betweenness, and closeness among the document network. Content features include keywords from the title and abstract using keyphrase extraction techniques. The model learns these features of a publication and infers whether the document would be an RF using sum-product algorithm and junction tree algorithm on a factor graph. We experimentally demonstrate that when predicting RFs, the FG predicted more densely connected documents than those predicted by RFs constructed using a traditional bibliometric approach. Our results also indicate that FG-predicted documents exhibit stronger degrees of centrality and betweenness among RFs.

Abstract

This study attempts to measure visibility and impact of university repositories in South Korea with the help of web-sites, OpenDOAR, ROAR and RWR. Further understanding the self-archiving status of South Korea, the analysis results were compared with the reputation and power of major Asian countries’ university repositories. The results showed that only nine institutional repositories of the universities in South Korea were active. There was only one South Korean university repository in the RWR top 500. All the other repositories ranked in bottom level. However, among Asian countries, Japan and Taiwan have established many institutional repositories. They had 257 and 52 repositories respectively. Fortunately, some leading university repositories in South Korea began activating self-archiving with the help of linking their own research outputs management system. Also, the attempts by other South Korean university repositories expect a substantial quantitative growth in the near future.

Abstract

As IT technology develops rapidly and the personal dissemination of smart devices increases, video material is especially used as a medium of information transmission among audiovisual materials. Video as an information service content has become an indispensable element, and it has been used in various ways such as unidirectional delivery through TV, interactive service through the Internet, and audiovisual library borrowing. Especially, in the Internet environment, the information provider tries to reduce the effort and cost for the processing of the provided information in view of the video service through the smart device. In addition, users want to utilize only the desired parts because of the burden on excessive network usage, time and space constraints. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the usability of the video by automatically classifying, summarizing, and indexing similar parts of the contents. In this paper, we propose a method of automatically segmenting the shots that make up videos by analyzing the contents and characteristics of language education videos and indexing the detailed contents information of the linguistic videos by combining visual features. The accuracy of the semantic based shot segmentation is high, and it can be effectively applied to the summary service of language education videos.

Abstract

Recently, the web service environment has changed from document-centered to data-oriented focus, and the Linked Open Data(LOD) exists at the core of the new environment. Specific procedures and methods were examined to build the LOD of records information in accordance with this trend. With the service sustainability of small-scale archive in consideration, an exemplification on LOD building process by utilizing open source software was developed in this paper. To this end, a 5-step service framework for LOD construction was proposed and applied to a collection of diary records from ‘Human and Memory Archive’. Proof of Concept(POC) utilizing open source softwares, Protege and Apache Jena Fuseki, was conducted according to the proposed 5 step framework. After establishing the LOD of record information by utilizing the open source software, the connection with external LOD through interlinking and SPARQL search has been successfully performed. In addition, archives’ considerations for LOD construction, including improvement on the quality of content information, the role of the archivist, were suggested based on the understanding obtained through the LOD construction process of records information.
